Lazy week in South Florida

Image
January 26, 2023 Our last blog entry was a week ago and I thought I’d better update it before I forget all we’ve done in the last seven days. Therein lies the problem, we haven’t done anything really blog worthy! How can I make mundane tasks sound exciting?  During an exhilarating 10K road race I called and rescheduled several doctors’ appointments! If you’re not buying that, just leave out the part in italics. Sunday was church day; Millie watched the service from her church in Myrtle Beach which they broadcast live. I was sitting nearby playing FreeCell on the computer; do I get any blessing thru osmosis from being nearby but not actually paying attention? One time consuming and frustrating task I had was trying to get a RV Park reservation on the west coast of Florida. Traditionally, I’ve never had much luck finding space in decent parks over there. This year was the worst; most parks aren’t even answering the phone. We plan on swinging by the west coast on the way home t...

Hunting for plants

Krome Ave Friday January 20 2023 Our outing today took us up Krome Ave for about 12 miles. The Ave runs north through an old downtown area, I’m not sure if it is considered Florida City or Homestead. It doesn’t really matter they have grown into the same conurbation.  Our goal today is to travel north to the commercial growing district. Many of the large growers sell wholesale to businesses only, but there are also retail nurseries along the road.  No, that's not the one she wants! We stopped at several in search of mandavilla vine plant. We discovered that they don’t do well in the tropic environment here in southern most Florida. Several people told us we would have to look further north in Florida to find them. No thats not the one! The cactus tent Along the way we did by some annual plants that Millie uses along the walk to our front door. Now all we have to do is keep them alive until planting time in South Carolina. The happy plant lady We met the nicest little ma...

Unwinding from the vacation

Wednesday January 18, 2023 We have been unwinding from the cruise, vacationing from the cruise vacation which was a vacation from our winter snowbird vacation! Millie has finished reading her Janet Evanovich book, I am nearly done with my Carl Hiaasen novel. Millie’s books from the Stephanie Plum series are always about stupid criminals and crazy people. Carl Hiaasen’s fictional novels are in the same vein, but always about people in Florida. Both writers use main characters that are…..lets say, slightly deviant from the norms of society. Think of Travis McGee, a reluctant hero boat bum by the author John D. McDonald. Just an FYI, there were 21 books in the Travis McGee series, all included a color in the title. I washed the truck, first time since leaving home in December. Millie washed clothes, first tim……just kidding, she takes good care of me! Tomorrow we plan on visiting the Keys. The month will be over before we know it and we always go one time while here. We will probably...

Millie's first cruise

Carnival Conquest Friday January 13 2023 As luck would have it a large cold front is sweeping across the south this weekend. Yesterday I had put extra tie downs on the awning but this morning I decided to roll it up to avoid it getting damaged by the wind. The weather forecast hadn’t changed, if anything it was calling for stronger winds, up to 40 MPH.  From our RV park to the cruise terminal It’s only about an hours drive into Miami and the cruise terminal. Aim-me our GPS and I bickered all the way, I was driving up the turnpike and she was insisting I get off at every exit and take city streets. I think she is programmed to avoid interstate highways, as we normally don’t like driving on them. This is what it will look like when done Just before we got to cruise island there was a large construction project going on, I think they are adding a third level of roadway through this bottle neck in the city. Anyhow, I was in the left lane because I would be exiting left into the ...
