Hunting for plants

Krome Ave

Friday January 20 2023

Our outing today took us up Krome Ave for about 12 miles. The Ave runs north through an old downtown area, I’m not sure if it is considered Florida City or Homestead. It doesn’t really matter they have grown into the same conurbation.

Our goal today is to travel north to the commercial growing district. Many of the large growers sell wholesale to businesses only, but there are also retail nurseries along the road.

No, that's not the one she wants!

We stopped at several in search of mandavilla vine plant. We discovered that they don’t do well in the tropic environment here in southern most Florida. Several people told us we would have to look further north in Florida to find them.

No thats not the one!

The cactus tent

Along the way we did by some annual plants that Millie uses along the walk to our front door. Now all we have to do is keep them alive until planting time in South Carolina.

The happy plant lady

We met the nicest little man working in one of the stores. I didn’t think to ask him where he was from but it had to be one of the Central American countries. The reason I mention him is he had a little dog that followed him everywhere he went. The dog was a doggie doppelganger for Eddie, the dog in the Frasier TV series.

Do you think the HOA will let me put one of these in the front yard!

We took a trip back to the Hispanic Market in Redland today. Actually, I think it is called the Redland Market; we’ve tagged the Hispanic name tag to it because Millie and I are outnumbered 100 to 1 by Hispanic folks from a number of different countries. Spanish is definitely the first spoken language here. The only time you hear any English is if you are going to buy something.

It's not the same USA of old

We walked miles going up and down the rows of new and used items. You can buy pretty much anything you want here. We did buy a couple gadgets and some produce. We had some of the fresh corn on the cob for lunch when we got home to the rv, it was delicious!

Don't ask me, I don't know what it says!
