The Incline

 When I was researching about Colorado for this trip I happened upon a blog posting on a hiking challenge in Manitou Springs. At that instant I knew I would conquer the incline. Not clickable video, just a picture. What is the incline? The facts first, it is an old cog train track that runs from the town of Manitou to the top of a mountain. The rails are long gone as are the original ties, having been replaced with pressure treated timbers.  2744 steps The railroad bed is .90 miles to the summit, the altitude at the base is 6600 feet above sea level, and the top of the mountain is 8600 feet. The journey to the top is a rise of 2000 feet and is accomplished by hiking up 2744 steps. The angle of the accent is always upwards, with an average angle of 40 degrees and an extreme section of 62 degrees. 8600 feet to the summit Hiking the incline started with locals and whiles no longer a low key feature of the town; it is still run by volunteers and not overrun with participants. Forest City to Cedar Falls to Iowa City

  The trip so far, 24 days on the road. June 9 2023 Friday. We had a busy day today; we got up early and took the 9 am tour at the Winnebago Motorhome factory here in Forest City Iowa. It is a huge complex with many large buildings and 4000 employees. Winnebago still builds their product the old fashion way, they do almost all of it in-house by their employees. There is very little done by subcontractors. During the tour I didn’t flaunt my experience in vehicle manufacturing even though I could see a lot of room for improvement in their build process. This is for my adopted southern family; that would be like a New Jersey transplant in the south saying, “up north we did it better!” Then again, I was but a minor cog in the system during my 38 years in the auto assembly business so what do I know.  Anyhow, they’ve been doing it this way for a long time and seem to be happy producing 8 motorhomes a day. Buddy Holly and the Surf Ballroom

  June 8 2023 Thursday This morning we drove to Clear Lake Iowa to tour the Surf Ballroom. It has been in operation at its present location since 1948. The Surf Ballroom may have already earned its place in music history in 1959, as any music legends had played there over the years. Back then you weren’t a success until you played the Surf. On February the 9th after the 1959 Winter Dance Party performance at the Surf, Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and JD Richardson (Big Bopper) boarded a small chartered plane to fly to the next stop on the tour. The airplane crashed into a farmer’s field shortly after takeoff, there were no survivors. The present day Surf Ballroom has been restored to its original 1948 design, it still hosts concerts at night, but during the day it is a museum for all the legendary performers who appeared there and a shrine to the three Rock and Rollers.
