Raccoon Branch CG in Virginia

 Sunday May 21, 2023 We departed the campground at Lake Murray (Dreher Island State Park) at 8:45 this morning. There was no line at the sewer dump station so we were only ten minutes or so emptying our holding tanks and getting out on the road. scenes from Raccoon Branch I planned a route without any interstate highway travel. There was one section of a state road north of Gastonia North Carolina that was limited access, but there was little commercial truck traffic. The main road of our route was Hwy 321, we traveled it from Columbia SC to Boone NC a distance of 150 miles. scene from Raccoon Branch We stopped for fuel and lunch in the Linclonton NC. No special reason why we chose this town, we just needed both. Leaving the limited access section of 321 we found a busy commercial area with lots of food choice’s but poor parking for an RV. Jimmy Fortune

  Saturday December 9th Millie and I have been fortunate in that we’ve seen live performances by pretty near every living entertainer that we’ve had a desire to see. Some like Gene Watson and we’ve seen multiple times. At times it seemed like we could never connect with an entertainer when he/she was in our area. Most of the time this was because we were traveling somewhere else at the time. One of the great performers that we had never been able to align our schedules with was Jimmy Fortune. You may know him from his twenty years with the Statler Brothers or his twenty years since then as a solo artist.  Jimmy Fortune   Some months back I checked his website and saw that he would be performing in Liberty North Carolina in December. The Incline

 When I was researching about Colorado for this trip I happened upon a blog posting on a hiking challenge in Manitou Springs. At that instant I knew I would conquer the incline. Not clickable video, just a picture. What is the incline? The facts first, it is an old cog train track that runs from the town of Manitou to the top of a mountain. The rails are long gone as are the original ties, having been replaced with pressure treated timbers.  2744 steps The railroad bed is .90 miles to the summit, the altitude at the base is 6600 feet above sea level, and the top of the mountain is 8600 feet. The journey to the top is a rise of 2000 feet and is accomplished by hiking up 2744 steps.
