The Great Summer Road Trip Begins!
May 7 2023
The great summer road trip of 2023 has begun. This morning a little after ten AM we departed our home in Myrtle Beach. Our mode of transportation is the same rig we’ve been using for 2 or 3 years now. Our 2016 Ram 1500 pickup rolled over on 100,000 miles as we started the trip, but I expect it to go many more miles with just routine maintenance. Our 2018 travel Trailer is still in pristine condition, I work on it all the time, but only because I want to, it’s given us no real problems.
Our destination today was south about 120 miles as the crow flies; I think we drove about 160 miles as we meandered our way around the countryside. We completely avoided Charleston, it’s a nice place to visit but if you’re just passing through, it’s just congested roads and many traffic signals.
We drove Hwy 17 from home to Georgetown, you don’t really have any other options going south on the coast. At Georgetown, we veered off on alt 17 which runs from here in a southwest direction. It’s a mixed sometimes two lanes, sometimes four lanes and most of the time it is a sensible 55 mph speed limit.
We traveled past several small villages as well as the city/towns of Monck’s Corner and Summerville. The area is mostly forested or cultivated, not a lot of people which is a big plus in my book. When we got to Beaufort South Carolina, we stopped at Publix for a chicken tender sub, sounds a bit strange but all I can say is if you try it once, you will never go back to a cold cut sub.
By the way, Beaufort South Carolina is pronounced like Beautiful, Thats Beau-fort, not to be confused with Beaufort North Carolina which is pronounced Bo-fort like Bo one of those good ol boys from up there who ride around in those dog squat trucks!
Sorry, I’ve wandered off subject. We are settled in on site 90 at Hunting Island State Park. The park is located on the ocean 12 miles east of Beaufort and about 50 miles north of Savannah Georgia. Yes we did drive about 160 miles from our home which is one mile from the ocean to our campsite here which is about 100 yards from the same ocean. I will not attempt to justify our actions, I’m not sure I even can? It’s just wanderlust!

After dinner, we walked around the campground, it’s a little over a mile of road, all of it is paved asphalt. Tomorrow we will hike a longer trail that goes thru the woods from the campground to the lighthouse further down the island. We will then walk the return trip on the beach. That trip will be about a 5 mile round trip. That sounds tiring, maybe we’ll just sit on the beach instead!
