More from Raccoon Branch

 May 23 2023 Tuesday

We are still at Raccoon Branch campground in Virginia, we will depart tomorrow and head to Kentucky. I expect it to be another long driving day because the route we chose is once again on state highways and secondary roads. There will be no limited access interstate highways tomorrow.

Next stop is Natural Bridge State Park in Kentucky

Today we visited with Betty and Paul again, Betty had prepared a meal for us and we ate al fresco on the long covered porch in their backyard. Two deer foraged for food where the lawn met the wood line of the surrounding forest. They were not the least bit interested in us and apparently knew the two dogs were behind a fence and could not give chase.

After our lunch we engaged in stimulating conversation that I’m sure was only interesting to us old people. The topics are not really important, Millie and Betty live a couple hundred miles apart and sisters need to visit each other once and a while.

In the afternoon we took another hike on the park service trails that connect at the campground. We started on the horse trail, but it was not visually appealing, was often wet, had lots of poison ivy and the creeks had to be forded by hopping from rock to rock, neither of us fell in. After about a quarter mile we agreed this was no fun and we turned back.

horse trails are for horses!

Along the way we intersected the Raccoon Branch trail which we knew would take us to the trail we hiked yesterday. After a short jaunt on the connecting trail we once again were trekking the steady uphill path. I had my phone with me today so was able to record some images of the trail and Lewis and Clark (our trail names) We didn’t go anywhere near as far up the mountain today, maybe a half a mile up we said that’s enough and down we went.

Tonight’s movie is The Bourne Identity. We’ve seen it several times but it's one of those you can go back to every couple years. It’s a totally unbelievable plot, but a fun to watch action adventure. We bought the trilogy at a thrift store for two bucks so we’ll be watching the other two movies in the series soon.
